San Giovanni in Laterano

Archbasilica of St. John Lateran | San Giovanni in Laterano on wikipedia
San Giovanni in Laterano is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome (the pope). It is one of the seven pilgrimage churches in Rome. It is the oldest of the papal basilicas, consecrated in 324 A.D.

The cathedral was redesigned, renovated and expanded several times in its history. One of the most recent and most notable additions to the cathedral are the 12 monumental sculptures of the 12 apostles in the niches lining the nave. The sculptures were commissioned in 1702 by Pope Clement XI, and they were completed by seven of the most talented late Baroque sculptors in Rome.

Santa Maria Maggiore

One of the seven pilgrimage churches, and one of the four major basilicas in Rome. Originally constructed during the papacy of Pope Sixtus III (432-440 AD), Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the first churches to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It has been renovated several times, most recently in the 1740s, including expansive renovations during the Baroque era.

Legend has it that the basilica’s 16th-century coffered ceiling (designed by Giuliano da Sangallo) is gilded with gold from the new world, which Christopher Columbus presented to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The Spanish monarchs then presented the gold to the Spanish pope, Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503).

San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane

Saint Charles of the Four Fountains

Architect: Francesco Borromini | Opened in 1646 | Via del Quirinale, 23 (click for google map) | sancarlino.eu | Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Carlo_alle_Quattro_Fontane

San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane is dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo (one of three churches in Rome dedicated to this saint, canonized in 1610) and it is named for its location at the corner of a four-way intersection where fountains mark each of the four corners. This church is masterpiece of Baroque architecture and ingenuity. The facade and the interior feature a complex series of curves and geometric patterns, and the dome and upper windows flood the church with light. Borromini’s ingenious design made the small church (measuring only 39’x66′) feel airy and spacious.
